A few words about Nafplio – Epidaurus – Mycenae

Among the greatest monuments of Greek Antiquity, the famous theatre at the Asklepieion of Epidaurus, the finest and most renowned of its kind, combines perfect acoustics with elegance and symmetrical proportions, qualities praised already in the second century AD by traveller and geographer Pausanias. During the overall construction of the Asklepios sanctuary, the theatre was built on the west side at the end of the classical era, in 340-330 BC. Until the third century AD, it hosted music, song and drama competitions during the Asklepian games taking place every four years in spring, after the Isthmia celebration, as well as drama performances in the worship of Asklepios. In the peaceful hinterland of Epidaurus, with its mild climate and abundant mineral springs, is the sanctuary of the god-physician Asklepios, the most famous healing centre of the Greek and Roman world. It is considered the birthplace of medicine and is thought to have had more than two hundred dependent spas in the eastern Mediterranean. Its monuments, true masterpieces of ancient Greek art, are a precious testimony to the practice of medicine in antiquity. Indeed they illustrate the development of medicine from the time when healing depended solely on the god until systematic description of cases and the gradual accumulation of knowledge and experience turned it into a science.

A special place, mysterious, blessed, full of natural beauty and culture, for centuries, continues to flourish and charms every visitor who without understanding, was initiated in the Beauty, Harmony, and in front of that dream become a reality. The place is authentic and that’s the magic of the search of every wayfarer he will visit Nafplion. The son of Poseidon, Nafplio, built by giving his name and memory was the first link in the chain of great cultural history, which does not reach the 999 stairs of the Castle Palamidi to the count. The Naples of the Orient “as they called the Venetian naval, stretched its roots, with respect to the historiC city and the current Nafplion, first capital of Greece in 1828, with the arrival of Kapodistrias still decorated with all the traditional elements , untouched by time. The reference point of the city, Bourtzi continues to keep alive the legends, polyfotismeni presence in the Gulf of Argos, built on the small island of St. Theodore. The fort of Palamidia, which has been preserved in excellent condition, is one of the greatest achievements of Venetian fortification architecture. The hill of Palamidi, which takes its name from the Homeric hero Palamidi, does not seem to have been systematically fortified until the second Venetian occupation. The construction of the fort was basically carried out during the time of Venetian General Superintendent of the Fleet, Agostino Sagredo, from 1711 to 1714, marking the fort not only as a major feat in terms of its fortifications, but also in terms of the speed with which it was constructed.

Mycenae ‘Rich in Gold’, the kingdom of mythical Agamemnon, first sung by Homer in his epics, is the most important and richest palatial centre of the Late Bronze Age in Greece (~7000 B.C). Its name was given to one of the greatest civilizations of Greek prehistory, the Mycenaean civilization, while the myths related to its history have inspired poets and writers over many centuries, from the Homeric epics and the great tragedies of the Classical period to contemporary literary and artistic creation. The archaeological site of Mycenae comprises the fortified acropolis and surrounding funerary and habitation sites, which are located mainly to its west and southwest. Most of the visible monuments date to the centre’s great floruit, from 1350 to 1200 BC. Great Cyclopean walls surround the almost triangular acropolis, which is accessed from the northwest through the famous Lion Gate, the symbol of the Mycenaean rulers’ power. The gate was named after the two opposing lions carved in relief and set into the relieving triangle, a typical feature of Mycenaean architecture, over the door.

A few words about Delphi

At the foot of Mount Parnassos, within the angle formed by the twin rocks of the Phaedriades, lies the Pan-Hellenic sanctuary of Delphi, which had the most famous oracle of ancient Greece. Delphi was regarded as the centre of the world. According to mythology, it is here that the two eagles sent out by Zeus from the ends of the universe to find the navel of the world met. The earliest finds in the area of Delphi, which date to the Neolithic period (4000 BC), come from the Korykeion Andron, a cave on Parnassos, where the first rituals took place. The remains of a Mycenaean settlement and cemetery were discovered within the sanctuary. Between the sixth and fourth centuries BC, the Delphic oracle, which was regarded as the most trustworthy, was at its peak. It was delivered by the Pythia, the priestess, and interpreted by the priests of Apollo. The archaeological site of Delphi includes two sanctuaries, dedicated to Apollo and Athena, and other buildings, mostly intended for sports. Visitors arriving from Athens first encountered the sanctuary of Athena Pronaia. To the northwest of the sanctuary of Athena Pronaia lay the gymnasium, a place for exercise and learning, the palaestra and the baths. Further up the slope was the Castalian spring, the sacred spring of Delphi, were travellers quenched their thirst after a long voyage and purified themselves before consulting the oracle. The central, most important part of the site was the sanctuary of Apollo, which was surrounded by the usual peribolos, or enclosure wall, with a main gate at its southeast corner.

A few words about Ancient Corinth

The site of ancient Corinth was first inhabited in the Neolithic period (6500-3250 B.C.). The peak period of the city, though, started in the 8th century B.C,, when Corinth became one of the leading powers of the Greek world, founder of colonies in the west Mediterranean, such as Syracuse, and lasted until its destruction by the Roman general Lucius Mummius in 146 B.C. Representative of its wealth and pioneering spirit in architecture, is the Doric temple of Apollo which was built in 540 B.C. The city was reinhabited in 44 B.C. and gradually developed again. In 51/52 A.D., Apostle Paul visited Corinth. The centre of the Roman city was organized to the south of the temple of Apollo and included shops, small shrines, fountains, baths and other public buildings. The invasion of the Herulians in A.D. 267 , initiated the decline of the city though it remained inhabited for many centuries through successive invasions and destructions, until it was liberated from the Turks in 1822. Limited excavations were conducted in 1892 and 1906 by the Archaeological Society of Athens under the direction of A. Skias. The systematic excavations of the area, initiated by the American School of Classical Studies in 1896, are still continuing today.

Half day (app.6h) Isthmos – Ancient Corinth

The tour is starting from your hotel in the morning and we drive direction to Peloponnese. After one and a half hour driving we arrive in the chanel of Isthmos for a coffee break and admire the chanel which connects Aegean and Ionian sea. Then, we need another 15 minutes to approach the Archaiological site of Corinth. Visiting the site takes approx. 1-1,5 hour and there is enought time for a lunch on our way back to Athens. An alternative is, after visiting the site, to go on driving forwards to Akrocorinthos, to visit the old castle and admire the fabolous view of the Corinthian Gulf.

2 Days tour Delphi – Kalambaka – Meteora

An opportunity to see two magnificent places at once is here. Early in the morning starts our adventure from Athens direction Delphi. It is a trip which takes circa 3 hours including a quick stop in the midway for a coffee. We drive through the beautiful village of Arachova before reaching the Archaeological Site of Delphi. There we can visit the interesting Museum and the mysterious landscape of the Archaeological site of Delphi. Afterwards we are ready to drive to next traditional tavern for lunch. After 1,5 hours driving we arrive in Thermopyles to see the monument of Leonidas.
Then we need another 2 hours driving till we arrive at our hotel in Kalambaka, where we are going to check in overnight. It is 18.30 in the afternoon. Enough time for having a shower and be ready for a nice dinner. A walk in the town would not be a bad idea.
Next morning, after having our breakfast we drive up to the Gigantic rocks to admire the magnificent view and the artistic Byzantine Monasteries of the famous Meteora.
Visiting Meteora takes about 3 hours time, depending on how many monasteries you wish to visit.
Returning back to Athens to your hotel will take approx 6 hours, including predicted break for lunch and stops.
Of course this tour, as anyone else, can be customised upon clients wish.

A few words about the site of Ancient Olympia

Olympia, one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece, was in ancient times the most important religious and athletic center, an institution with nationwide radiation and glory from antiquity to today. Its fame rests upon the Olympic Games, the Olympics, which were held every four years in honor of Zeus, in classical times, comparable in importance to the Pythian Games, held in Delphi. In Olympia was the gold and ivory statue of Zeus, made by Pheidias, which was known in antiquity as one of the 7 wonders of the world.
In the Archaeological Museum is the statue of Hermes of Praxiteles, one of the most important exhibits of the museum. God rests on a tree trunk. In his left hand, the little Dionysus. The Greek beauty, balance, art. During Roman times, the statue had interventions when transferred to Iron. Today, the museum of Olympia, except Mercury, there are findings from excavations in the sacred area of the Altis. Exhibits from prehistoric times to early Christian times, the most important reports of the sculptures, home and chariot race of Pelops and Oenomaus and the Winged Victory of Paionios.
The ancient stadium has taken the form, we see today, in the early 5th century. BC, when the great temple of Zeus was built . In antiquity, southern of the stadium was the hippodrome .
The Sanctuary of Zeus, father of the gods, temples and buildings directly related to worship, but also buildings for hospitality for the Olympic Games: sports facilities, auxiliary buildings, utilitarian and administrative, but also secular buildings. A central part of the Altis, the sacred grove, where was developing the core of the sanctuary.
In the same area there are buildings, bath complexes and villas, such as the famous mansion built by Nero when he lived in Olympia to take part in the games. When Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire, the Olympic Games gradually lost their importance after longer regarded as a pagan celebration. Finally, in 393 AD Emperor Theodosius prohibited the conduction of the games. Since then Ancient Olympia never lived again grandeur and glamor,by beeing the center of the organization the Olympic Games. On August 18th 2004, the ancient stadium of Olympia lived again moments of glory, after 1611 years, and hosted the shot put event of men and women in the context of the modern Olympic Games in Athens.

2 days tour to Ancient Olympia

Early in the morning we drive direction southern Peloponnese and our first stop after approx. 1.5 hour is the canal of Corinth for a coffee brake and shoot some photos of the amazing construction of the canal.
After this quick pause, we continue our tour direction to Messinia and circa after 2 hours we stop in a small village in the south western coast of Peloponnese, for a typical Greek lunch. If you desire swimming, is also possible there and our destination is not far from there.
In the evening we check in the hotel where we are going to overnight.
Free time to walk along the beautiful alleys of the town of Olympia for a drink or a dinner.
Next day, after breakfast, you are ready to admire the ancient beauty by visiting the Archaeological site and museum of Ancient Olympia.
Guiding visit, takes about 2,5 hours.
Lunch will be taken place either in the village or on our way back to Athens.
An alternative, for nearly the same tour is to combine it with another destination, like Mycenae.
Such a choise requires direct driving from Athens to Olympia in order to visit the site the same day, overnight in Olympia and next day drive to Mycenae – Nafplio.

A few words about Mystras

Mystras, the “wonder of the Morea”, situated on Mount Taygetos, near ancient Sparta. Is a fortified town in Laconia, Peloponnese, Greece. Was built as an amphitheatre around the fortress, erected in 1249 by the prince of Achaia, William of Villehardouin. Ten years later, in a battle in northern Greece, Villehardouin was defeated and captured by the Byzantine Emperor. The terms for his release included giving Mystra to the Byzantine Greeks. Under their rule, the city flourished and developed into a centre of learning and the arts and was a focal point for the cultural development of Europe. It served as the capital of the Byzantine Despotate of the Morea in the 14th and 15th centuries. Since then and until 1460 that fell into the hands of the conqueror Mohammed ,Mystras is administrated by two imperial families, Katakouzinos and Palaiologos. Last Despot of Mystras was Konstantinos Palaiologos, the so-called Dragasis, from 1443 until 1449, when it was crowned emperor of Byzantium in 12th March of 1449 at Mystras, in the church of St. Demetrius. The last emperor of Byzantium, Constantine XI Palaeologos. Experiencing a period of prosperity and cultural flowering, the site remained inhabited throughout the Ottoman period. In the 1830s, it was abandoned and the new town of Sparti was built, approximately eight kilometres to the east, leaving only the breathtaking medieval ruins.

5 days classical tour

It may sounds classical but, it is unforgettable!!!

Money value tour for those who wish to see more in less time. Different cultures in the same country, various sites from ancient ages and the beautiful country side in addition with the famous hospitality of the local people, will make an unrepeatable experience for you.

1st day. Athens-Kalambaka. The great excursion begins from your hotel early in the morning with direction to northern Greece. After 2½ hours driving we reach the monument of Spartans in Thermopiles. It is a nice place for making a break and shoot some photos’ there. Then, after 30min driving we will leave the motorway and drive to the country side, direction to Kalampaka. In the midway we can stop for a quick lunch. Now we are only 1½ hour driving for our first check in the hotel in the city of Kalambaka or the surrounding area. Kalambaka is a small beautiful town, very close to Meteora and there is plenty of time to enjoy a diner, a drink or just a walk around.

Highlights 1st day.

2nd day. Meteora-Delphi. Next morning, after having our breakfast we drive up to the gigantic rocks to admire the magnificent view and the artistic Byzantine Monasteries of the famous Meteora. Visiting Meteora takes about 3 hours’ time, depending on how many monasteries you wish to visit.

After this great experience of the hanging Monasteries, we are ready to drive to our next target, what else? Delphi! In the midway we make a stop for lunch. The route we follow this time is very interesting because it is along the mountain, uphill’s and downhills across the ravines of Parnassus Mountain. A mountain with very big history, where the village and the Oracle of Delphi, are located. The driving from Meteora to Delphi takes about 3½ hours. After the check-in, in the hotel, you have free time to enjoy your dinner and possibly a walk along the alleys of the nice village of Delphi. The climate there is perfect and one hour sleep counts double.

After visiting the site, we are ready to take the long drive direction to Ancient Olympia. The lunch will take place after approx. 2 hours driving in the beautiful small town of Naupactus. This route, is also a very nice one, along the southern coast of Central Greece. Naupactus is the last point before crossing the magnificent bridge Rio-Antirio on our way to Peloponnese. By leaving the bridge we meet Rio and after this the city of Patras. After 1½ hour driving we are doing our third check-in, in the hotel in Olympia village. Olympia is a small nice village with one of the biggest and most famous archaeological sites and monuments.

During the Games even wars were stopping. It was a great honor even to be able and be there, at that time. After we lived this experience and had lunch, we are ready to go on and drive with direction to Nafplio. This drive will take about 2½ hours till we reach the city of Nafplio. Nafplio is one of the nicest cities and the first Capital City of Greece (before Athens). After the check-in there, you have many choices to spend a very romantic night.
